Decanting old wines just a few moments before they are served helps to ensure that the wines' clarity and brilliance are not obscured by deposits and sediment. Decanting young wine several hours before they are served allows the wine to bloom and attain a stage of development that normally requires years of aging.

We originally purchased one of the many very broad based decanters that provide maximum surface area for contact with the air. That decanter looked nice but took up a lot of room on the table and frankly was a bit cumbersome when it came to actually pouring the wine. Getting the last glass of wine out without spilling any takes some extra care. More than once we slopped that last glass because we weren’t paying attention. Eventually that decanter was accidently broken and we needed a new on. This smaller Reidel decanter is excellent. It is easy to handle and pour from. It takes up less space on the table and looks great. The glass is thin and looks quite elegant. Yes, it is sized for a 375 ml bottle but holds 750 ml quite nicely. With 750 ml in it, it is about 60% filled,(from bottom to top) so it does not look overfilled or anything like that. Does this mean that you are not getting the maximum surface of wine exposed to the air? Yes. I compensate for that by pouring my wine through an aerator as it goes into the decanter and the wine ends up tasting great. BTW, I just received a Vinturi aerator for Christmas and that thing works quite well when used this way. I found that using the Vinturi at each glass (as suggested by the manufacturer) is a pain and messy. Using an aerator with this decanter is an excellent way to go, in my opinion. You get a classy looking, easy pour decanter and the wine gets aerated. What more could you want?

A simple yet elegant decanter that does the trick. Allows wine to breathe and makes an average bottom seem much better than drinking straight from the bottle.

I love this decanter for it is the perfect size. Had one before and I broke it so I went online and got the same one again.

I’m very happy with this purchase. It does appear small, but easily holds a 750 ml bottle with room to spare. Looks nice on the table. Good price and quality relative to what else is available at Amazon or other stores like Crate & Barrel.

Yes, it is made to be a decanter for half bottles, but yes it does easily hold a full bottle. What I use this decanter for is to have a nice presentation of the wine at dinner. So, I decant it then pour 2 to 4 glasses, and the rest of the wine sits in the decanter on the table until it is consummed. If you use it in the same manner, you do not have to worry about the size (but again, it fits an entire bottle so do not fret about size unless you need maximum air contact). I also bought a second one and use it as a water pitcher to have at the table, and guests love it.
