It works as its supposed to mechanically, however the plug doesnt stay put due to the pressure change inside the bottle. Especially when wine is left outside after its been chilled in a refrigerator.
As is often the case with WMF products, I look at them and say to myself, “there is NO WAY that is worth the price”. I have not been right about that yet. I bought one of these in Germany and they are simply fantastic.
The description does not do this item justice though. The way it works is that you put the rubber part in the bottle, hold the black collar area firmly against the bottle’s mouth, and twist the top. As you twist, the cork area expands until it eventually meets the glass. You can thus make the seal very tight on *any* kind of bottle. I’ve never seen a stopper like this before, and I can say it works really, really well.
I did have one (another brand) that had a lever that forced the same kind of expanding action on the cork, but it was either “expanded” or “not expanded” – there was no room for adjustment. It ended up that it never had quite the right fit, so I could usually just pull the cork out without releasing it first. That is very hard to do with this one.
